FAST

FAST is a remote editing system I developed from scratch for the New Straits Times Press, to transmit pictures “fast”, within 10 seconds if Internet speed allows.

President Obama lands in Kuala Lumpur, steps out of Air Force One, waves, and photojournalist Aizuddin Saad starts shooting. Obama steps down the stairs, and moves toward his car. Our pictures of him are online before he gets into his car. Yes, in only a few seconds, 10 at most!

With FAST (File Advanced System Transmit), pictures are edited remotely by FAST “buddies” anywhere around the globe, wherever there is Internet. Our main FAST Desks are located in Putrajaya and Bangsar, Malaysia. Pictures are edited in Putrajaya, then sent to Bangsar for captioning, in real time.

Other examples of FAST editing:

  • Pictures of the flood on Malaysia's east coast in 2013 were sent by photojournalist Yazit Razali while he was still shooting from a helicopter. The pictures were online even before the chopper landed.
  • Pictures of the oath-taking ceremony by the new Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali landed on our desk even before he finished taking his oath.
